Patrick Flegel, formerly of Women, has announced their next studio album under the Cindy Lee moniker. It’s called What’s Tonight to Eternity, and it arrives on February 14 via W.25TH. Listen to the LP’s lead single “Heavy Metal” below and scroll down for the album art and tracklist.
What’s Tonight to Eternity was partly inspired by Karen Carpenter. “I found a deep interest and comfort in her story, which is a cautionary tale about the monstrosity of show business, stardom at a young age, and being a misfit looking for connection,“ Flegel said in a press release. They continued:
The darkness and victimizing tabloid sensationalism she suffered,
which is easily tempered and overwhelmed by her earnest output, her
artistry, her tireless work ethic. Something utterly unique and
magical takes shape in the negative space, out of exclusion. What I
relate to in her mainly has a lot to do with her output and what is
unknown about her, how much she kept hidden to herself while having
this public profile.
In addition, the album draws on the work of classic singers like Patsy Cline and the Supremes, who Flegel claims “carried [them] through the hardest times of [their] life, and also provided the soundtrack to the best times.” What’s Tonight to Eternity also explores queer identity and gender expression. “Heavy Metal,” meanwhile, is a tribute to late Women member Chris Reimer, who died in 2012 at the age of 26.
