David Berman Gets Tribute at Tennessee Titans Football Game

David Berman—the late songwriter of Silver Jews and Purple Mountains—was a football fanatic, and he referred to the sport regularly throughout his songs, poetry, and interviews. Berman moved to Nashville in 1999, which was also the year of the Tennessee Titans’ inaugural season in the city—they had previously been located in Houston and known as the Oilers—and they became his favorite team.

Now, as his label Drag City notes on Instagram, a tribute message was shown on the Jumbotron during Sunday’s Titans game against the Kansas City Chiefs. (The Titans won 35-32.) “Nashville (and the world) will always love David Berman,” the message read. See it below.

Since Berman’s death in August, artists including Bill Callahan, First Aid Kit, and Kevin Morby and Woods have covered his songs. His final album was released in July.
