Exclusive: Profiling the young hotsteppers who are changing the face of Hindi cinema

Hindi cinema is undergoing a resurgence. The dynamics of box-office success has changed. Films can no longer piggyback on stars to reach the 100-crore mark. The discerning audiences reject or reward a film without restraint. Content has become superlative making glossy packaging and formulaic fixes redundant. Riding solely on compelling storylines, cinema in the recent past, has been ably shouldered by a breed of young actors.

Yes, the Khans are still the big daddies. Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Ayushmann Khurrana… are verily the millennial superstars. But unconventional talents like Tiger Shroff, Vicky Kaushal and Kartik Aaryan… who have slalomed into the 100-crore plus club with their earthy appeal… now enjoy a formidable place. Similarly, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma are still the biggest crowd-pullers. But power girls Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor and Ananya Panday can’t be ignored. They may have been to glamour born. But they take nothing for granted. The Young Turks of Bollywood are here… Read on…

Janhvi Kapoor

Young Janhvi Kapoor entered the industry under great pressure. Carrying forward the legacy of her late mother, the iconic Sridevi, wasn’t easy. To top that she was quietly dealing with the trauma of her death. But Janhvi passed the test with flying colours. The audiences embraced her. With Dhadak, the young girl has become the nation’s sweetheart. A millennial inspiration, she’s constantly stalked on social media sometimes for her style game, sometimes for her doe-eyed charm. Janhvi has a fantastic line-up of films. She’s doing the biopic of Gunjan Saxena, the first female Indian Air Force pilot in combat. She also has Karan Johar’s magnum opus Takht, Dostana 2 and Roohiafza opposite Rajkummar Rao. Her alleged romance with Dhadak co-star, Ishaan Khatter, has also kept the tabloids buzzing.

Ananya Panday

Just two years back, Ananya Pandey was a chirpy teenager hanging out with other star kids Suhana Khan and Shanaya Kapoor. Cut to 2019, she’s now the face of cosmetic brands, a showstopper for designers, a social media sensation and the lead actor of interesting film projects. Ananya was launched by Dharma Production in Student Of The Year 2. The audience lapped up her charm and chutzpah. Filmmakers were quick to sign her. She’s all set to entertain the audience soon in the upcoming Pati Patni Aur Woh and Khaali Peeli.

Ishaan Khatter

Unlike his brother Shahid Kapoor, who debuted with the commercial rom-com Ishq Vishq, Ishaan Khatter took the offbeat route. For his launch, he chose Majid Majidi’s Beyond The Clouds and gave an early glimpse of his gravitas. As Amir, he was an absolute natural. He even took home the Filmfare Award for Best Debut for his brilliant performance in Beyond The Clouds. The critical acclaim was balanced by the commercial success of Dharma Productions’ Dhadak. A remake of the Marathi blockbuster Sairat, Dhadak saw Ishaan paired opposite alleged girlfriend Janhvi Kapoor. Audiences took to their innocent chemistry.  Now, Mira Nair has cast Ishaan in the screen adaptation of A Suitable Boy. He will also be seen with Ananya Panday in Khaali Peeli. His interactive presence on social media has helped his burgeoning number of followers.

Tara Sutaria

The chirpy Tara Sutaria was a known name even before her first film hit the theatres. She was a child artiste and later become the lead in many of Disney’s television shows. Her big break in Bollywood came with Student Of The Year 2. Her next film would have been the mega blockbuster Kabir Singh, for which she was reportedly the initial choice. She let go off it for Marjaavaan in which she’s paired opposite Sidharth Malhotra. Post that, Tara has the remake of RX 100, the launch vehicle of Suniel Shetty’s son Ahaan Shetty. Apart from movies, the effervescent girl is the tabloid’s delight given her various link-ups and break-ups.

Disha Patani

Though Disha Patani made her debut in 2016 with the superhit MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, it was only last year that she made big noise with Baaghi 2 opposite Tiger Shroff. The movie went on to rake in crores and put Disha on the map. This year’s Eid biggie, Bharat, saw her matching steps with Salman Khan. She had arrived into the big league. Disha’s currently gearing up for her next release, Mohit Suri’s Malang opposite Aditya Roy Kapur. It’s not just films, which have upped Disha’s mojo. With over 25 million followers on Instagram, she’s a social media sensation. Her each post garners massive traction. She has become the face of numerous brands, all thanks to her social media prowess. From raising the mercury in a bikini to switching on the ‘awww’ factor posing with pets, the girl knows how to blow hot blow cold. The paparazzi’s princess, Disha’s Sunday outings with Tiger ensures the flashbulbs have a field day.
