The Super Bowl isn’t just a time for good football and great commercials, it’s also time for all the movies and TV shows you love to debut their big trailers, and blessed be the fruit, one of those trailers was for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3.
The short teaser for the next installment of Hulu’s hit series is eerily set to Ronald Reagan’s iconic “Morning in America” campaign, which quickly devolved from a message of tranquility and hope to the fiery and nightmarish reality of Gilead. In it, we see shots of Emily (Alexis Bledel) on the run with baby Nicole, a very pissed-off Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) standing in a house on fire, and a huge gathering of Handmaids in Washington, D.C. Please note the horrifying change to the Washington Monument, which has been transformed from an obelisk into a giant cross.
Even though this short spot seems to indicate some terrifying trials ahead for our characters, we’ve got a small scrap of hope that things in Gilead might change in Season 3. In the teaser, June ominously tells America to “wake up,” and Season 3 promises to feature themes of optimism, hope and renewal. Additionally, executive producer Bruce Miller hinted that we’ll see more and more people start to take a stand against Gilead.
“I think overall Season 3 is a lot more rebellious, outwardly rebellious than Seasons 1 and 2. I think June’s taken a lot, and I think it’s time for her to give back some,” Miller told TV Guide on the red carpet of the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The Handmaid’s Tale Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Hulu.
