The Sky Is Pink is hands down one of the most awaited releases of the year 2019 and the biggest reason for that is Priyanka Chopra. The actress will be returning to the big screen after a gap of three years and was last seen in Jai Gangajal back in 2016. Apart from Priyanka, the film also features a talented cast including Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim and Rohit Saraf. So, with the film hitting the screens today and the critics already giving it a thumbs up, we list 5 reasons why you should check this one out the coming weekend.
1. Priyanka Chopra
While the film has a lot going on for it that will get people to the theatres, the biggest factor without a doubt is Priyanka Chopra. Yes, our desi girl has gone on to become a global superstar and has been away from Bollywood for three long years now. And now, she finally makes her return with The Sky Is Pink. Despite her taking a break from the Hindi cinema scene, her popularity and love amongst the audience has not changed one bit. In fact, people are now eager than ever to watch Peecee slay on screen again.
Talking about her performance in the film, Priyanka manages to hit every note right about her character. From playing a carefree young woman enjoying her life to a mother who puts in her everything just for her daughter’s smile, Priyanka manages to shine in every scene. This was certainly an interesting project for her to pick as a comeback film and after watching her act we completely understand and back her decision.
2. Supremely talented cast
While Priyanka Chopra’s return is obviously a big factor behind the hype surrounding the film, one cannot overlook the extremely talented cast that we see in the film. Talents like Farhan Akhtar and Zaira Wasim have already proved their worth on the screen and continue to do so with this one. Farhan and Priyanka impressed us with their chemistry, albeit for a small duration, in Dil Dhaadakne Do and they pick right where they left off here. Yes, their couple in the film might have their fair share of differences and do argue a lot, but their love always comes through. Just like every couple out there. Zaira Wasim yet delivers another impressive performance with this one. The young star, who made her debut in Dangal and was later seen in Secret Superstar, proves yet again that why she’s one of the best young actors around.
The way she approaches her character makes you root and cheer for her instead of feeling pity. Though the actress recently announced that she will not continue with acting as a profession, we deeply feel that she should reconsider as we would be missing out on a serious talent. Rohit Saraf, who impressed with his performance in films like Hichki, Dear Zindagi and also has starred in the Norwegian film titled What Will People Say, manages to deliver a decent perfomance.
3. Story that you will relate to
The film is based on Aisha Choudhary, a motivational speaker who suffered from a rare genetic disease that ended up taking her life at the tender age of 18. But, making a film on a true story alone does not make it relatable to the audience. It requires special efforts from the writers, director and also the actors. But, the team of The Sky Is Pink have delivered on all fronts with this one. In the film, we see a fictionalised account of the struggle that Aisha’s parents went through to keep her alive and doing everything they can to make her last days her happiest. The film is narrated by Aisha Chaudhary (Zaira Wasim) from beyond her grave. The story starts off with Niren Chaudhary (Farhan Akhtar), a man with a corporate job in Delhi who falls for Aditi (Priyanka Chopra) and the two get married. Years later, we see them with two children, living the perfect life.
Things take a turn when they find out that their younger daughter Aisha is diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, a genetic disorder that reduces the immunity in the body and makes it more prone to infections and other diseases. The couple end up spending 10 years in London for their daughter’s treatment. They return to India and we feel it’ll be smooth sailing again but a side effect from Aisha’s treatment causes her to develop pulmonary fibrosis – a type of condition that causes hardening of the lungs. The Sky Is Pink as a film is as real as it gets. The characters, the emotions, the acting, the dialogues… everything seems real.
4. Shonali Bose’s stellar direction
This movie is a deeply personal project for Shonali Bose as she lost her 16-year-old son, Ishan, in a domestic accident in 2010. Previously, the director worked on film like Margarita With A Straw (2014) and Amu (2005) both of which were well received by the audience and critics.
However, with The Sky Is Pink she truly has arrived in the big league. While from the story you could imagine that the film will be one long tearjerker, Shonali Bose takes a whole new route with it. She brings a positive spin on the otherwise emotional plot and makes you smile despite really feeling for the people involved in the situation.
Music is another department in which The Sky Is Pink has got a thumbs up from the fans. The music director Pritam has been longing for an opportunity to work with Gulzar for a while now and with this it looks like he’s definitely made the most of it. Dil Hi Toh Hai is our best pick from the lot and along with it being a brilliant upbeat love song, the cinematography that we witness during the song in the film is truly commendable. Have a look below.
The song Pink Gulabi Sky, which is played during the credits of the film is another peppy number that the fans have enjoyed.
