What happens when you combine the zany antics of Flight of the ConchordsJemaine Clement with Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi? A whole lotta fun from the looks of it. FX has released the trailer for its vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows, and it looks to be a satisfying adaptation of the cult New Zealand mockumentary of the same name.

The show centers on a trio of roommates, who also just so happen to be vampires. There’s Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), a former warrior of the Ottoman Empire who considers himself the leader of the group. Then there’s Lazlo (Matt Berry), a British vamp who loves mischief and undermining Nandor, and his wife Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), a wise temptress with some serious stories to tell. They’ve been hanging out and making each other miserable for decades in Staten Island, but when they’re visited by their leader Baron Afanas, he reminds them that they’ve been tasked with taking over the world, so they better get to it.

The trailer also introduces us to Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), who Nandor’s human familiar who wants to be a vampire, too, as well as Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), an energy vampire who either bores his subjects to death. If you thought Office Space‘s stapler bit was hysterical, just wait ’til you see what this guy does with an electric sharpener.

There will be some key differences between the series and the cult film though, starting with the fact that executive producers Clement and Waititi, who starred in the original film, will not be in front of the camera for this series.

“I have also done it in the past, written a show and been in it and it is exhausting,” Clement said during the What We Do in the Shadows panel at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Monday. “At the time [of writing the show], we thought Taika couldn’t be in it because he was making that Thor movie that is mentioned on that trailer, so it didn’t make any sense to have the rest of us [in it].”

Instead, the show’s vampires are hanging out in America, which also leads to some changes in the characters they meet along the way. Specifically, the werewolves they encounter do not carry the same “werewolves, not swearwolves” philosophy of the New Zealand pack in the film.

“There’s some werewolves in the series, but they’re not New Zealand werewolves,” Clement explained. “They’re American, so they swear. They’re east coast, New York werewolves.”

In addition to releasing the trailer, FX also announced that What We Do in the Shadows will premiere on the network on Wednesday, March 27 at 10/9c.
